The Benefits of Outdoor Play in Child Development

As an adult, it can be challenging to cut back on screen time and sometimes it can be much more of a challenge to encourage your children to take a step back as well. They live in a world where digital games, TV, phones and iPads are more accessible than they’ve ever been before. However, while screen time does have some benefits, research shows that finding a healthy balance between physical and outdoor play and screen time can help improve physical and mental health. Furthermore, research confirms that physical play can partially reverse negative effects on the brain associated with excessive screen time.

At Stepping Stone School, we strive to remain current with the latest in educational research regarding child development. Our desire is to support families as they determine how best to balance healthy technology usage in their home while enabling their child to learn about the benefits technology offers. Our innovative Future Strong™ program provides calming environments that promote learning, growth and development. You can learn more here:https://www.steppingstoneschool.com/future-strong/ In addition we are dedicated to providing a healthy balance between physical activities which is apparent in our Fit For Life™ program and educational screen activities through ABC Mouse and our SMART Boards.

Here are some ways that you can encourage a balance between screen time and physical play at home:

1.) Set Clear Screen Limits. Begin by establishing clear limits. Create a daily or weekly screen time allowance based on your child’s age, needs, and schedule. Discuss these limits with your child to ensure they understand the boundaries. Choose physical activities and play during the time when screens are off limits.

2.) Prioritize Educational Content. Encourage your child to spend a significant portion of their screen time on educational content. Many apps, websites, and platforms offer interactive and informative resources that can enhance learning.

3.) Encourage Outdoor and Physical Activities. Promote outdoor play and physical activities to balance sedentary screen time. Research has confirmed that six hours of physical and leisure time per week can reduce the risk of obesity and improve cognitive development.

4.) Encourage Hobbies and Interests. Help your child discover and pursue hobbies and interests beyond screens, such as sports, arts and crafts, music, dance or reading. These activities offer alternative sources of enjoyment and skill development.

5.) Join Camp and Enrichment Programs. Enroll your child in summer camps, sports leagues, or community programs that emphasize physical activity and social interaction. Stepping Stone School offers a robust Enrichment Curriculum, as well as fun Summer and Holiday Break camps.
