Happy World Water Day – Make Your Own Underwater Viewer!
In honor of World Water Day, we are sharing an activity that showcases the importance of clean water which is a vital part of the ecosystem! Help them make an underwater viewer to explore this important resource.
Make It!
What you’ll need:
• A clean, empty metal can
• Paints and paintbrushes (optional)
• Plastic wrap
• Rubber bands
Step 1:
Using a can opener, cut off both ends of the can so it’s open on the top and bottom.
Step 2:
Let your children paint or decode the outside of the can.
Step 3:
Cover one of the can’s open sides with the plastic wrap, and secure with a rubber band.
Step 4:
Take it to the shoreline and try it out!
This experiment works best in shallow water along the shoreline. They can place the scope on the water’s surface or submerge the viewer halfway, with the plastic wrap facing down.
This is a great opportunity to discuss the importance of clean water! Children can look for rocks, shells, fish and other items to explore and examine.
Happy World Water Day!
